Sherece Shavel, Ph.D., M.S.W.

Dr. Sherece Shavel is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Tarleton State University and founder of Care.2.Inspire, Inc. that supports formerly incarcerated parents in efforts to overcome the developmental challenges related to active parenting. Her professional initiative is to sensitize the social consciousness of others to the parenting challenges being confronted by formerly incarcerated fathers in addition to advancing their social position within the family unit and the broader community. Dr. Shavel has a perspective that is based on an underlying attitude of resilience and determination which influences her research agenda. Her research interests include paternal experiences among formerly incarcerated African-American men, post-traumatic growth among formerly incarcerated individuals, intersection of mental health and spirituality, and mobilization and advocacy among marginalized groups.

Dr. Shavel holds a Bachelor’s in Social Work (Seton Hall University), a Master’s in Social Work Administration, Policy, and Planning (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey), and a Ph.D. in Human Services with a Criminal Justice specialization (Walden University). Her credentials include licensure as a Master Social Worker (LMSW) and Human Services Board-Certified Practitioner (HS-BCP). She enjoys spending time with family and friends, experiencing culture-enriched vacations, and performing as a vocalist to support community initiatives.
