NPEN-L Listserv

NPEN-L is a closed, unmoderated listserv of the National Parenting Education Network (NPEN). NPEN focuses on advancing parenting education through the collaboration of representatives of several parenting education organizations on issues and projects of mutual interest. The discussions focus on organizational matters for the group and on issues of substance related to the improvement of parent education. The list is owned by Bernard Cesarone (cesarone@illinois.edu).

Getting started

subscribe	How to Subscribe NPEN-L is a closed list for which automatic subscriptions are not possible. To subscribe, send a request for subscription to Anne Robertson at: arobrtsn@illinois.edu
send	Send a Message To send a message to all the members of the NPEN-L list, compose your e-mail message as usual and send it to the list discussion address: npen-l@listserv.illinois.edu

Settings and Options

changing settings	Do NOT send any mail setting changes to NPEN-L Setting Mail Options for NPEN-L To change your mail settings for NPEN-L, send an e-mail message to: listserv@listserv.illinois.edu

There are three different mail options for the NPEN-L listserv:

mail	MAIL: Messages arrive in your mail box one at a time as they are posted to the listserv. This is the setting you are AUTOMATICALLY given when you subscribe. It is very easy to respond directly to messages received, but some people find that so many separate messages can clutter up their mail box.

nomail	NOMAIL: You remain subscribed to NPEN-L, but new messages will not be sent to you. This is a good way to keep your mail box from filling up if you will be on vacation or away from your e-mail account for an extended period. To temporarily stop mail from being delivered, send the following command: set NPEN-L nomail To undo this command, send the following message: set NPEN-L mail

digest	DIGEST: You will receive only ONE message per day from NPEN-L which includes ALL of the day's postings collected together. Digests are nice if you don't like wading through lots of separate messages, but it's harder to reply to any one specific posting. To start receiving mail in digest form, send the following command: set NPEN-L digest To undo this command, send the following message: set NPEN-L mail

changing settings	Do NOT send acknowledgement or reproduction setting changes to NPEN-LSetting Message Acknowledgements and Reproductions To change your acknowledgement and reproduction settings for NPEN-L, send an e-mail message to: listserv@listserv.illinois.edu

The Acknowledgement setting tells the Listserv computer whether or not to send you an acknowledgement whenever you send a message to the list. The setting options are ACK and NOACK. For instance, if you send a message with subject line "General Information", you can automatically get a message back from the Listserv computer that is something like: Your message dated XXX with subject "General Information" was successfully distributed to the XXX list.

ack	Acknowledgement: To receive an automatic acknowledgement from the Listserv computer whenever you post a message to the list, send the command: set NPEN-L ack

noack	No acknowledgement: If you do not want to receive an acknowledgement, send the message: set NPEN-L noack

The Reproduction setting tells the Listserv computer whether or not you want to see your own message posted to the list. The setting options are REPRO and NOREPRO.

repro	See own message: If you want to see your own message posted to the list, send the message: set NPEN-L repro

norepro	Don't see own message: If you do not want to see your own message posted to the list, send the message: set NPEN-L norepro

It is a good idea to set one of these options "on" (i.e., ACK or REPRO) so that you can know that your own posting has been received by the list. There are default settings for these options for each Listserv list. Each list may have different default settings.

Unsubscribe

signoff

Do NOT send your message to NPEN-L.

Unsubscribe: To unsubscribe from NPEN-L, all you need to do is send a one-line e-mail message to listserv@listserv.illinois.edu that reads: signoff NPEN-L

Note that there is no reason to include a subject, your name, or your e-mail address. Your message to LISTSERV should not include a "signature" if at all possible. The computer will try to interpret the lines of your signature as commands. You should receive a note confirming your signoff within a few minutes (although sometimes it can take and hour or two).
